On a generalized approach to the linear stability of spatially nonuniform thin film flows

چکیده
The presence of a deformable free surface in thin films driven to spread by body or shear forces gives rise to base states that are spatially nonuniform. This nonuniformity produces linearized disturbance operators that are non-normal and an eigenvalue spectrum that does not necessarily predict stability behavior. The falling film provides a simple example for demonstrating a more generalized, rigorous nonmodal approach to linear stability for free surface flows. Calculations of the pseudospectra and maximum disturbance amplification in this system, however, reveal weak effects of non-normality and transient growth such that the modal growth rate is rapidly recovered. Subdominant modes contribute little energy to the leading eigenvector because the oscillatory behavior is rapidly damped by surface tension. Generalization of these results to numerous other lubrication flows involving surface tension suggests similarly weak non-normality and transient growth. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1564094#

Instabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane
Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...
متن کاملA General Approach to the Linear Stability of Thin Spreading Films
Marangoni and thermocapillary driven systems represent two classes of flows in which the variation in surface tension at the gas-liquid interface can generate spontaneously spreading films. This article considers the linear stability of such flows within the lubrication approximation. Since the base state or unperturbed solutions in both cases involve spatially inhomogeneous profiles, the linea...
متن کاملSpin wave propagation in spatially nonuniform magnetic fields
Spin wave pulse propagation in a magnetic thin film under static, spatially nonuniform magnetic fields has been studied. The experiment was carried out with an yttrium iron garnet film strip. The film strip was magnetized with a spatially nonuniform magnetic field parallel to the length of the film strip. Spin wave pulses were excited with a microstrip transducer at one end of the film strip. T...
متن کاملStability Analysis of Non-constant Base States in Thin Film Equations∗
We address the linear stability of non-constant base states within the class of mass conserving free boundary problems for degenerate and non-degenerate thin film equations. Wellknown examples are the finger-instabilities of growing rims that appear in retracting thin solid and liquid films. Since the base states are time dependent and do not have a simple travelling wave or self-similar form, ...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of Birefringene Effect on the Light Reflection
In the present paper, the problem of light reflection from a birefringent medium and thin film is considered. First, the analytical equations governing the propagation of a plane and harmonic electromagnetic wave in an infinite, birefringent, linear, non-dispersive, non-absorbing, and non-magnetic medium is derived from Maxwell equations. Then, using phase matching condition and boundary condit...
